Tidal James River Fishing Reef Pilot is a two-volume set with full color graphics that explores Virginia’s tidal James River and its tidal tributaries for structures from the Colonial era through the Civil War to modern day that provide three-dimensional marine habitat and recreational fishing spots. Each volume compiles "where to fish" and provides a handy reference for follow-up armchair scouting while also serving as an information resource to aid in trip planning. For on-the-water use, each volume was written to standalone as a tacklebox field guide by including the same introductory material about the river setting and the tidal river system's salinity regime and by including location maps and precise geographic coordinates. Each volume has a separate and distinct foreword focused towards its area of coverage.Part 1 covers tidal freshwater fishing structure from the Falls of Richmond to Jamestown Island. Tidal tributaries explored include the Appomattox, Chickahominy, and Back Rivers; Dutch Gap gravel pit and wreck graveyard; and Falling, Powell, Herring, Upper Chippokes, Grays, and Powhattan Creeks. Part 2 covers saltwater fishing structure from College Creek to Thimble Shoal. Tidal tributaries explored include the Nansemond, Pagan, Warwick, Hampton, Lafayette, and Elizabeth Rivers; and College, Lower Chippokes, Jones, Chuckatuck, and Mill Creeks.Recent hydrographic surveys were scoured for charted and “technological burns” of uncharted holes and trenches, ancient riverbed rapids, rocks, ruins, “wing dams,” wrecks, obstructions, piers and docks, mooring dolphins, bridge piers, offshore platforms, oyster reef remnants, “buoy holes,” flooded sand and gravel pits, artificial reef deposits, shell dredging digs, and environmental restoration sites. Structure is characterized by composition, configuration, least depth, and vertical rise off the bottom. Findings from sonar data also reveal previously unknown bottom structures including wrecks and obstructions. Full-color three-dimensional illustrations are selectively used to draw out structural detail that isn't obvious when sonar data are viewed in two dimensions.Material included is suitable for new recreational fishermen looking where to begin fishing the tidal James River system, occasional fishermen seeking to optimize available fishing time, and veteran fishers expanding to new areas.
